Railway bridge in the Valley of Clarens, Switzerland

PROJECT: International competition
YEAR: 2016
LOCATION: Montreux, Switzerland
TYPOLOGY: Railway bridge
DESCRIPTION: Extradosed concrete bridge 124 length and 65 maximum spam
STRUCTURAL DESIGN: GmásP, Alex Garate
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: CROPKA Architects

The project, with the topic “Columna Vertebrae”, adapts to the displacements of a hillside in continuous displacement thanks to a delicate balance between lateral flexibility and vertical stiffness. The joints between the different “vertebrae”, allow the bridge to accept the ground movements, thus achieving an integral bridge, low maintenance.

The bridge consists of two spans of 59 and 65m supported by a central pile with variable section in height on which the extradosed sails are provided. Prestressing tendons run through the interior of the sails allowing to materialize a slender and attractive bridge.
